Mallorca is the undisputed cycling capital of Europe, and it’s easy to see why. With quiet roads, dramatic mountain climbs, warm spring weather and a well-developed cycling infrastructure, it draws tens of thousands of cyclists from the UK every year — particularly between February and May.
Getting there from London
Direct flights to Palma de Mallorca run from Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Luton with easyJet, Ryanair, British Airways and Jet2. Flight times are around 2 hours 15 minutes. Most cyclists fly in March, April or early May to avoid the summer heat and tourist crowds.
Taking your bike
You’ll need to travel with your bike in a hard case or soft bag. Most airlines flying to Palma allow bikes as oversized luggage for a fee of around £45–£60 each way — book this at the same time as your flights as fees increase and spaces are limited.
Rather than buying a bike box, many London cyclists hire one for the trip. At London Bike Box Hire, we offer premium BikeBoxAlan hard cases from £6/day, with 24/7 self-collection from Wimbledon Chase. Book your bike box here.
Where to stay and ride
The main cycling hubs are Port de Pollença in the north and Playa de Palma in the south. Most cyclists base themselves in Pollença or Alcúdia for easy access to the Tramuntana mountain range — home to iconic climbs like Sa Calobra and the Puig Major.
If you prefer flatter riding, the south and east of the island offer long flat roads ideal for time trial training and triathlon prep.
Key events
- Mallorca 312 (late April/early May) — one of the most popular gran fondos in Europe, covering 312km around the island
- Ironman 70.3 Mallorca (May) — a major triathlon drawing competitors from across Europe
- Challenge Peguera (October) — a full-distance triathlon on the west coast
Book your trip and your bike box well in advance if you’re travelling around these events — demand for flights and accommodation spikes significantly.
