General tips
🕐 Always pre-book your bike in advance — space in the hold is limited and most carriers cannot guarantee acceptance without prior notice.
📱 Screenshot or print the airline's bike policy page before you travel — check-in staff aren't always familiar with the rules and having the policy to hand can smooth things over.
⚖️ Weigh your packed box at home — a BikeBoxAlan case with a road bike typically comes in between 14–18 kg, well within most limits, but worth confirming before you leave.
💨 Deflate your tyres slightly before flying — cabin pressure changes can cause over-inflated tyres to bulge. Drop to around 60–70 psi for air travel.
🛡️ Check your travel insurance covers your bike in transit — most airlines accept limited liability for sports equipment damage.
⏱️ Allow extra time at check-in — out-of-gauge items like bike boxes need to go via a separate desk, and queues can be longer than standard check-in.
🔋 E-bikes are almost always excluded from passenger luggage due to battery regulations — check with your airline well in advance if you're travelling with one.
💰 Always compare the total cost — ticket price plus bike fees for the full return journey. The cheapest ticket can quickly become the most expensive option once bike fees are added.
